HPE

HPE 873359-B21 400 GB 2.5" SAS 12Gb/s internal hard drive

SKU CH-VHD2-WV4TR

400 GB 2.5" SAS 12Gb/s internal SSD for HPE servers, mixed-use endurance and digitally signed firmware

  • Accelerates data-intensive workloads with mixed-use endurance
  • SAS 12Gb/s interface delivers high-speed data transfer
  • 5-inch form factor fits standard server bays
  • 400 GB capacity supports demanding applications
  • Digitally signed firmware protects against unauthorized access

Capacity and purpose

The HPE 873359-B21 is a 400 GB solid-state drive built for HPE servers that need a balance of random read and write IOPS. It suits mixed-use workloads such as databases, virtualization and analytics where endurance matters more than pure capacity.

Sustained workload behaviour

Mixed Use SSDs typically have an endurance of between <1 and <10 drive writes per day so performance stays consistent under continuous I/O pressure. Over 3.35 million hours of qualification testing back the drive’s ability to maintain throughput without throttling.

Installation and common issues

The 2.5 inch form factor fits standard HPE Smart Carrier bays and connects through a SAS 12Gb/s interface. Compatibility is limited to HPE servers so the drive will not work in non-HPE chassis or consumer desktop systems. Digitally signed firmware prevents unauthorised flashing but also blocks third-party firmware tools.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the 400 GB SAS 12Gb/s drive produce when running continuously in a server?

The 2.5" solid state drive has no moving parts so it generates minimal noise and less heat than mechanical drives during sustained operation.

What server and interface must already be present to install the 873359-B21?

The drive requires an HPE server with an available 2.5" SAS 12Gb/s drive bay and a compatible SAS controller or backplane.

Will the 12Gb/s SAS SSD work alongside older 6Gb/s SAS drives in the same HPE server?

Yes, the 12Gb/s SAS interface is backward compatible with 6Gb/s SAS infrastructure, so the 400 GB drive can share a backplane with older SAS drives.
