A 2U rack server with twelve 3.5-inch drive bays, dual 2.6 GHz Xeon processors and 32 GB DDR4 memory
The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors running at 2.6GHz. It ships with 32GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and supports up to 3TB across its DIMM slots. The chassis provides twelve 3.5-inch drive bays wired to an HP Smart Array P440ar SAS controller with an expander. Dual 800W hot-plug power supplies and HPE iLO remote management are included.
This platform fits organisations that need large-capacity SATA or SAS storage in a compact rack footprint, such as backup repositories, archival stores or software-defined storage nodes. The twelve-bay layout and integrated 10GbE networking support high-throughput data ingest. Buyers who require direct-attached PCIe flash or U.2/U.3 devices should look elsewhere, as the backplane and controller are designed for traditional spinning media and SAS SSDs.
The single specification that determines fit is the twelve-bay 3.5-inch LFF chassis. It dictates the maximum raw capacity, the physical drive form factor and the airflow path for the installed 800W power supplies. If the deployment calls for a different bay count, 2.5-inch drives or a shorter chassis depth, this server will not meet the requirement.

The chassis is 36 inches deep, 24 inches wide and 10 inches high, so the rack must provide at least 36 inches of usable depth and a 24-inch wide mounting opening.
Slide each supply into the rear bays until the latch clicks, then seat both IEC cables; the step often missed is engaging the redundant power cable on the second supply.
The system ships with 32 GB in two 16 GB modules and supports up to 3 TB; add matched DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs when workloads exceed the installed capacity.
