Transceiver delivers 1000BASE-SX Gigabit Ethernet over multimode fibre at 850 nm with a 550 m reach and DOM monitoring via duplex LC connectors
The Juniper Networks EX-SFP-1GE-SX is a Small Form-Factor Pluggable transceiver built for Gigabit Ethernet links over multimode fibre. It suits network engineers extending campus or data-centre connections where copper reach is insufficient.
The module draws minimal power and generates little heat during normal operation, allowing dense port populations without active cooling. Hot-plug support means links can be added or replaced without powering down the switch.
A duplex LC connector pairs with 850 nm optics to deliver a 550 metre link on OM2 multimode fibre. Digital Optical Monitoring gives real-time signal health data, and the silver housing identifies the module in a crowded patch panel.

Insert the module into a compatible SFP port until it clicks, then connect the duplex LC cables matching Tx to Rx; the step often missed is removing the dust caps from both the transceiver and cable ferrules before linking them.
The optical interfaces require periodic cleaning with a lint-free swab and isopropyl alcohol to prevent signal loss; no user-serviceable parts exist, so a failed unit is replaced as a whole module.
The 550 metre reach over multimode fiber at 850 nm is the primary constraint; beyond that the optical budget is exceeded and errors increase.
