HPE Smart Array P431 6Gb SAS RAID Controller

The HPE Smart Array P431 is a low-profile PCIe 3.0 x8 RAID controller with two external 6Gb SAS ports and 2GB flash-backed write cache. It targets administrators adding external storage arrays to compatible HPE ProLiant Gen8 rack or tower servers. The card supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and ADM for data protection.

Verify PCIe 3.0 x8 slot and external SAS cabling

Before ordering, confirm the server has an available PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot that accepts a low-profile card measuring 7.5 by 9.5 inches with a 2.3 inch thickness. Ensure the chassis provides cut-outs for the two external mini-SAS connectors and that the backplane or external enclosure uses 6Gb SAS links.

Low-profile design fits standard server airflow

The plug-in card draws power from the PCIe slot and relies on the server's internal cooling; no dedicated fan is present on the controller. In normal operation the card adds minimal thermal load and acoustic noise to a properly ventilated ProLiant chassis. Power consumption scales with attached drive count and RAID rebuild activity.

Questions about this item

Does the HPE P431 controller include the 2 GB FBWC module or must it be ordered separately?

The 2 GB FBWC module is integrated into the card, so no separate flash-backed write cache purchase is required.

Should I choose the 698531-B21 model or another capacity for external SAS expansion on a Gen8 server?

The 698531-B21 provides two external 6 Gb/s SAS ports and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, ADM for external storage expansion.

What does the 6 Gb/s SAS rating mean when the card is installed in a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot?

Each of the two external ports delivers up to 6 Gb/s SAS throughput, while the PCIe 3.0 x8 host interface supplies ample bandwidth for RAID operations.
