Hubbell-Raco 161 Octagon Box

The Hubbell-Raco 161 is a 4-inch octagon box designed for mounting ceiling or wall lighting fixtures. It also serves as a junction box for electrical wiring connections. The unit includes a wood or metal stud bracket for secure attachment to framing members. It is manufactured in China and sold in new condition.

1-1/2-Inch Deep Construction

The box provides a 1-1/2-inch depth to accommodate wiring and device connections behind fixtures. Side knockouts measuring 1/2-inch allow cable entry from multiple directions. The steel construction maintains rigidity during installation and long-term mounting. Combination screw heads speed up cover or fixture fastening.

Stud Bracket Mounting

The integrated bracket fastens directly to wood or metal studs without extra hardware. Knockouts require a screwdriver or knockout tool to remove cleanly. Over-tightening the mounting screws can strip the bracket holes in softer studs. Misaligned knockout removal may leave sharp edges that need deburring before cable pulling.

Questions about this item

Does the 161 box generate noticeable heat or noise when powering a ceiling fixture continuously?

The 161 is a passive metal enclosure with no moving parts or electronics, so it produces no noise and negligible heat during continuous operation.

What mounting hardware must I already have to secure the 161 box to a stud?

You will need appropriate screws or nails for wood or metal studs; the bracket accepts standard fasteners but they are not included with the box.

Can I use the 161 box with older 1/2-inch conduit and existing wiring in a renovation?

Yes, the 161 features 1/2-inch side knockouts compatible with standard 1/2-inch conduit and cable connectors used in older installations.
