146GB 15000RPM SAS Enterprise Drive

This new IBM ST9146852SS is a 146GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 15000RPM with a 6Gb/s SAS interface. It ships with an IBM System X caddy for direct installation in compatible bays. The unit is built for enterprise server and storage arrays that demand high spindle speed.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This drive suits administrators maintaining IBM System X servers that require 2.5-inch 6Gb/s SAS drives with the supplied tray. Buyers who need larger capacity per spindle, a different physical interface, or drives for non-SAS backplanes should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification: 6Gb/s SAS interface

The single specification that decides fitment is the 6Gb/s SAS interface; the drive only works in controllers and backplanes that support this exact protocol. Verify the host system accepts 2.5-inch SAS drives before purchase.

Questions about this item

How much power and heat does the 15000RPM SAS drive produce during continuous operation?

The 15000RPM spindle speed means higher sustained power draw and heat output than slower drives; ensure your server chassis provides adequate airflow for 2.5" SAS bays.

What controller or backplane must my system already have to use this 6Gb/s SAS drive?

You need a SAS controller or backplane that supports 6Gb/s SAS signalling and 2.5" SFF drive bays; the included IBM System X caddy fits standard SFF trays.

Will this 2.5" SAS drive work in an older server that only has 3Gb/s SAS ports?

Yes, the 6Gb/s SAS interface negotiates down to 3Gb/s on older controllers, so the drive remains usable at the lower link speed.
