What the IBM VXA-320 does

The IBM VXA-320 is an internal tape drive built for backup and archival tasks. It writes up to 160 GB native or 320 GB compressed per cartridge using helical-scan recording. The SCSI interface suits servers and workstations that still run a SCSI bus. It is not for users who need random-access speed or solid-state reliability.

Installation notes

The half-height 5.25-inch form factor fits a standard drive bay and measures 1.7 inches high, 5.9 inches wide and 8 inches deep. Mounting rails and SCSI cabling are not included, so verify bracket and connector availability before ordering. SCSI termination and ID configuration must be set correctly or the drive will not appear on the bus. It is not for systems that lack a free SCSI controller or external enclosure.

Capacity that decides fit

Native capacity is 160 GB per tape with a maximum native transfer rate of 12 MB/s; compressed capacity reaches 320 GB at 24 MB/s. Match these figures against your backup window and data set size to confirm suitability.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the VXA-320 is writing at 12 MB/s native speed after installation?

Run a backup job and verify the drive reports a sustained native transfer rate of 12 MB/s in the backup software log.

Does the 25R0045 include SCSI cables or terminators, or must I source them separately?

The drive ships as a bare internal unit; SCSI cables, a host adapter and any required terminators are not included.

Should I choose the 160 GB native or 320 GB compressed capacity rating for my media planning?

Plan on 160 GB native per cartridge; the 320 GB figure assumes 2:1 compression which varies with data type.
