4 TB SATA hard drive for IBM storage

This 4 TB drive spins at 7200 rpm and connects through a SATA 600 interface in a 3.5 inch form factor. It is built for IBM storage systems that need high-capacity nearline storage with hot-swap support.

Hot-swap tray simplifies drive replacement

The drive ships in a hot-swappable carrier that lets technicians swap modules without powering down the enclosure. This reduces service time and keeps arrays online during maintenance or expansion.

Suits nearline arrays needing hot-swap 3.5 inch

It fits IBM and compatible Lenovo enclosures that accept 3.5 inch SATA modules with 600 MB/s signalling. Buyers who need smaller 2.5 inch form factors or non-hot-swap fixed installations should look at something else.

Questions about this item

Will the 49Y6002 drive need any firmware updates or bearing service during its life?

The drive is a sealed 4 TB 7.2K SATA unit with no user-serviceable parts; firmware updates are only applied if the host system vendor releases them.

Does the 7200 rpm spindle speed limit sustained write throughput before the SATA 600 interface saturates?

Sequential transfers peak at the drive's media rate, which is lower than the 6 Gbps SATA link, so the spindle speed is the first bottleneck.

How much heat and noise does the 3.5" 4 TB module produce when running continuously in a hot-swap bay?

The 1.64 lb nearline drive idles quietly and generates modest heat typical for 7200 rpm SATA drives; exact acoustics and thermals depend on the enclosure airflow.
