900 GB 10K SAS drive

The IBM 81Y9651 is a 900 GB internal hard drive spinning at 10000 RPM with a SAS 6 Gbps interface and a 16 MB cache. It uses a 2.5 inch form factor and supports hot-swap installation in compatible server bays.

Suited for server storage arrays

This drive fits administrators expanding or repairing SAS-based storage arrays that require 10K performance and hot-swap capability. It is not for buyers who need larger capacities, solid-state speeds, SATA-only backplanes, or 3.5 inch form factors.

SAS 6 Gbps interface

The SAS 6 Gbps interface determines whether this drive will operate in your backplane or controller. Verify that your system supports SAS at this speed and the 2.5 inch hot-swap carrier before purchasing.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 10000RPM SAS drive generate during continuous operation?

The 10000RPM spindle speed and SAS interface mean the drive produces more heat than slower SATA models; ensure your server chassis provides active airflow across the 2.5" bay.

What controller or backplane do I need to run this 6Gbps SAS drive?

A 6Gbps SAS HBA, RAID card or SAS backplane with a free 2.5" hot-swap slot is required; SATA-only controllers will not recognise the drive.

Will this 2.5" SAS drive fit in my older 3.5" server bay?

The 2.5" small form factor needs a 2.5" hot-swap carrier or a 3.5"-to-2.5" adapter bracket to mount in a 3.5" bay; the SAS connector pinout matches standard enterprise backplanes.
