IBM 20 Gb 2.5-inch IDE notebook drive

This new IBM Djsa-220 provides 20 Gb of storage in a 2.5-inch form factor. It spins at 4200 rpm and fits the standard 9.5 mm drive bay. The drive uses an IDE/ATA interface for direct connection to compatible notebook controllers.

IDE/ATA interface limits for legacy notebooks

The IDE/ATA interface caps transfer rates below modern serial standards. The 4200 rpm spindle speed limits random access performance for multitasking workloads. The 20 Gb capacity fills quickly with current operating systems and applications. Builders needing higher throughput or larger volumes cannot use this drive.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 20 Gb capacity or is another size available?

This model is offered in a single 20 Gb capacity, so no other size option exists for the Djsa-220.

What does the 4200 rpm spindle speed mean for everyday laptop use?

The 4200 rpm rotation gives modest data throughput suitable for basic office tasks and older operating systems, but it will feel slower than modern drives when loading large applications.
