Capacity and interface

This IBM HUS724040ALS640 drive provides 4000GB of storage in a 3.5in form factor. It spins at 7200RPM and connects through a SAS 6Gbps interface. A System X caddy is included for mounting.

Suitable systems and limitations

The drive fits servers and workstations that accept a 3.5in SAS device and can supply the required controller. It is not suited for systems that lack a SAS host bus adapter or that only provide 2.5in drive bays. The included tray matches IBM System X chassis.

Deciding specification

The SAS 6Gbps interface is the single specification that determines compatibility. Verify that your backplane or controller supports this exact interface before purchase.

Questions about this item

Does the drive come with the SYSTEM X caddy needed to mount it in a 3.5" bay?

Yes, the listing includes the SYSTEM X caddy/tray so the 3.5" SAS drive can be secured in a compatible server or workstation chassis.

Will the 6Gbps SAS interface negotiate down to 3Gbps if my backplane only supports the older speed?

SAS 6Gbps drives are backward compatible and will automatically link at 3Gbps when connected to a 3Gbps backplane or HBA.

How can I confirm the drive spins at 7200RPM and reports 4000GB after installation?

Check the drive’s SMART data or BIOS detection screen; it should show 7200RPM rotational speed and a 4000GB capacity.
