Enterprise 1.2 TB SAS drive

The IBM ST1200MM0009 is a new 1.2 TB hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a 12Gbps SAS interface in a 2.5 in form factor. It is built for enterprise storage arrays and servers that require high-throughput block access.

Suited for SAS bays, not laptops

This drive fits 2.5 in SAS hot-swap bays and controllers that support 12Gbps speeds. Buyers without a SAS backplane or HBA cannot connect it; systems limited to other interfaces will not recognise the drive.

12Gbps SAS interface decides fit

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 12Gbps SAS interface; the host must provide a matching SAS port and protocol support for the drive to operate.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" SAS HDD into a compatible drive bay?

Slide the 2.5 in SAS drive into the hot-swap tray until the connector seats firmly on the 12Gbps backplane, then secure the latch; the step most people miss is fully engaging the latch so the SAS link initialises at 12Gbps instead of falling back to a lower speed.

What maintenance or replacement will the 1.2 TB 10000RPM SAS HDD need later?

The 10000RPM mechanical drive will eventually require replacement when bearing wear or media errors appear; monitor SMART reallocated-sector counts and plan a swap once the 1.2 TB capacity shows consistent read retries.

What limit appears first on the 12Gbps SAS HDD under sustained write workloads?

The 10000RPM spindle speed caps sustained sequential throughput, so the mechanical media transfer rate becomes the bottleneck before the 12Gbps SAS interface saturates.
