IBM

IBM ST91000640SS 1 TB 7200 RPM 2.5" SAS HDD

SKU CH-0AKX-KYTPZ MPN ST91000640SS

2.5-inch SAS hard drive stores 1 TB at 7200 RPM for enterprise servers

  • 1 TB capacity stores large datasets
  • 7200 RPM rotation speed delivers fast data access
  • SAS interface connects to enterprise storage systems
  • 5 inch form factor fits dense server bays
  • Nearline design balances performance and capacity

1 TB SAS drive for enterprise arrays

This 1 TB hard drive uses a 6 Gbps SAS interface and spins at 7200 RPM in a 2.5 inch form factor. It is built for IBM System Storage environments that require dual-ported reliability. The drive is new and identified by part numbers 00Y2434, 00Y2511 and 00Y5723.

Sustained throughput on nearline workloads

A 7200 RPM spindle delivers consistent sequential bandwidth for nearline datasets rather than burst-oriented caching. The SAS link maintains full-duplex command queuing during extended read and write streams. Mechanical latency stays predictable because the motor speed does not throttle under load.

6 Gbps SAS bus ceiling

The 6 Gbps SAS interface caps maximum sustained transfer at the link rate minus protocol overhead. Dual-port topology adds failover paths but does not double single-stream bandwidth. Systems without a 6 Gbps SAS backplane or HBA cannot reach the drive’s rated ceiling.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the 7200 RPM ST91000640SS produce during continuous operation?

The drive spins at 7200 RPM with a SAS interface; typical nearline 2.5" SAS drives at this speed run warm and emit audible seek noise under sustained load.

What host hardware must I already have to install this 2.5" SAS drive?

You need a system or enclosure that accepts a 2.5" SAS drive and provides a SAS connection compatible with the 6 Gbps interface.

Will the ST91000640SS work in an older server that only supports 3 Gbps SAS?

The drive uses a 6 Gbps SAS interface; SAS standards are backward compatible, so it will negotiate down to 3 Gbps on an older controller.
