What it is

The IHDAPP AC1300 is a USB 3.0 wireless adapter that adds dual-band 802.11AC Wi-Fi to desktops, laptops or Macs. It supports Windows 11 down to XP and Mac OS X 10.9 through 10.15, and includes a 5dBi high-gain antenna for extended range.

Deciding specification

The single figure that determines suitability is the AC1300 class: up to 867 Mbps on the 5.8 GHz band and 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. If your router or use case needs higher throughput or a newer Wi-Fi generation, this adapter will not meet that requirement.

Installation and common issues

Plug the adapter into a USB 3.0 port for full speed; it falls back to USB 2.0 or 1.1 if necessary. Driver installation is required on all supported operating systems. The 5.8 GHz band delivers best performance at short range, while 2.4 GHz remains more stable at distance.

Questions about this item

What real-world speeds can I expect from the AC1300 rating on each band?

The adapter delivers up to 867 Mbps on the 5.8 GHz band and up to 400 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band when paired with a compatible router.

Does the USB 3.0 interface limit throughput compared to the adapter's maximum wireless speed?

USB 3.0 provides ample bandwidth for the adapter's 867 Mbps peak on 5.8 GHz and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports.

How much clearance does the 5 dBi antenna need when plugged into a desktop or laptop?

The high-gain antenna extends from the USB body, so allow a few centimetres of side or rear space for the best signal and to avoid physical strain on the port.
