USB 3.0 AC1200 Wi-Fi adapter for desktop users

This USB 3.0 wireless adapter adds dual-band 802.11ac connectivity to desktops and laptops. It supports Windows from XP to 10, Mac OS 10.6 to 10.13 and Linux. The Realtek 8812BU chipset delivers AC1200 class speeds through a 5dBi external antenna.

Sustained throughput via USB 3.0 and 5dBi antenna

The USB 3.0 interface provides up to 5Gbps bus bandwidth, ten times faster than USB 2.0, so the adapter can maintain its 867Mbps 5.8GHz or 300Mbps 2.4GHz link rates without bottlenecking. The high-gain 5dBi antenna improves signal penetration and coverage, reducing drops during long streaming or gaming sessions.

AC1200 dual-band speed rating decides fit

The single specification that determines suitability is the AC1200 rating: 867Mbps on 5.8GHz and 300Mbps on 2.4GHz. Buyers whose router only supports 2.4GHz 802.11n will not reach the 5.8GHz rate, and those needing faster than 867Mbps must choose a higher-class adapter.

Questions about this item

Does the 5 dBi antenna on this USB 3.0 adapter run hot or make any noise during all-day use?

The adapter has no moving parts and draws power only from the USB port, so it stays silent and generates negligible heat even with continuous operation.

What operating system must my computer already run for this AC1200 dongle to work?

It supports Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000, Mac OS 10.6 through 10.13, and Linux, so one of those must be installed.

Will the Realtek 8812BU chipset connect to my older 802.11n router on the 2.4 GHz band?

Yes, the adapter is backward compatible with 802.11 a/b/g/n standards and will link at up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with that router.
