Universal Dovetail Plate

The iOptron 178 mm Universal Dovetail Plate provides a Vixen-style mounting platform for telescopes on compatible iOptron mounts. Its design ensures a secure connection that minimises vibrations during astronomical observations. The plate measures 1.8 by 7 inches (4.6 by 17.8 cm) and is supplied new.

Replaces Standard Plates

This plate upgrades from shorter or less rigid dovetail bars that can flex under heavier optical tubes. The 178 mm length distributes the load across a wider footprint for improved tracking stability. The jump is worthwhile when your current plate allows noticeable drift or vibration at high magnification.

Build Integration

The Vixen profile allows the plate to clamp into any saddle built to that standard, including all iOptron mounts and many third-party equatorial heads. It frees up the need for brand-specific adapters when mixing optical tubes across different mount systems. Buyers needing a Losmandy-width rail or a longer plate for heavy astrographs should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

What are the exact dimensions of the iOptron 178 mm Universal Dovetail Plate?

The plate measures 1.8 by 7 inches, which is equivalent to 4.6 by 17.8 centimetres, providing a compact yet stable mounting footprint.

How do I install this dovetail plate on my iOptron mount, and what is the common mistake?

Slide the Vixen-style plate into the mount's saddle and tighten the locking knob securely; the step users often miss is confirming the plate sits fully flush before locking it down.

Will the mounting hardware or finish need replacement over time?

The dovetail plate itself is a solid metal component with no moving parts or consumable surfaces, so it does not require scheduled maintenance or periodic replacement under normal use.
