This Kastar NP-FV50 set supplies two 7.2 V lithium-ion cells rated at 1550 mAh and 11.16 Wh each. They replace Sony NP-FV30, NP-FV50, NP-FV70 and NP-FV100 batteries and fit a long list of Handycam, FDR-AX and HDR-PJ camcorders. The pack is aimed at videographers who want spare power for all-day shoots without carrying a charger.

Capacity and headroom for typical recording

Each cell delivers 1550 mAh, enough for several hours of continuous 1080p capture on compatible models. Runtime drops when the camcorder drives a bright LCD, uses optical stabilisation or records at higher bit-rates. Cold weather and frequent start-stop cycles also reduce the practical capacity you will see in the field.

Limits of the NP-F series form factor

The NP-FV50 footprint fits only camcorders and chargers designed for Sony's InfoLITHIUM V series. It will not work with larger NP-FV70 or NP-FV100 bays that expect a taller pack, nor with older L-series or M-series slots. The bundled protection circuit prevents over-charge, over-discharge and over-heating, but it cannot overcome the physical and electrical limits of the host device.
