Kingston SSDNow KC300 240 GB SATA drive

This 2.5 inch solid state drive connects through a SATA interface and provides 240 GB of storage capacity. It suits desktop owners who want faster boot times and application loading compared with a mechanical hard disk.

Practical limits of the SATA interface

The SATA bus caps maximum sequential transfer rates well below the speeds possible with a PCIe based SSD. Random read performance reaches 84000 IOPS and random write reaches 52000 IOPS. Buyers who need higher throughput or lower latency should consider a drive that uses a faster interface.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 240 GB version or a larger capacity?

The 240 GB capacity suits an operating system and core applications; if you store large media libraries or many games, a higher-capacity SATA drive would be more practical.

What does the 84000 IOPS random read figure mean for everyday use?

That random 4 KB read speed lets the drive fetch small files quickly, so the operating system boots faster and applications launch with less delay compared with a mechanical hard drive.
