Ship Auger Bit 7/8'' x 18''

The L.H. DOTTIE 1814 is a ship auger bit designed for boring deep, clean holes in timber. It suits professional carpenters, timber framers and contractors who need reliable performance in heavy-duty wood drilling applications.

18 inch overall length

The 18 inch overall length determines the maximum drilling depth achievable in a single pass. This dimension is the critical specification for matching the bit to beam thickness or through-hole requirements on site.

Hex shank fits standard drill chucks

The bit installs directly into a standard drill chuck via its hex shank, requiring no special adapters. Ensure the chuck is tightened securely on the flats to prevent slippage under high torque loads.

Questions about this item

How deep can this 18'' auger bit actually bore in one pass?

The 18'' overall length lets you drill through thick timbers or multiple joists in a single stroke, limited only by your drill's chuck reach and the workpiece thickness.

What shank style does the 1814 bit use to lock into a drill?

It fits a standard 1/2'' drill chuck with a hex shank that prevents slipping under high torque when boring large 7/8'' holes.

Will the 7/8'' diameter clear standard framing lumber without binding?

The ship-auger flute clears chips fast, so the 7/8'' cutter bores clean holes in dense framing lumber without overheating or jamming.
