Lamotte 0171 Secchi Disk 20 cm

The Lamotte 0171 is a 20 cm Secchi disk constructed from HDPE with a black and white quadrant pattern. It serves as a standard optical tool for estimating water transparency in lakes, rivers and marine environments. Field technicians and environmental scientists lower the disk on a line and record the depth at which the pattern disappears from view.

Environmental monitoring and education

This disk suits limnologists, oceanographers and students conducting Secchi depth surveys where a durable, non-corrosive plate is required. It is not intended for users who need an integrated depth scale or a weighted assembly supplied as a single unit. Buyers requiring automated optical sensors or electronic data logging should consider alternative instrumentation.

Questions about this item

What does the 20 cm diameter mean when I lower the disk into water?

The 20 cm black-and-white disk is lowered until it disappears; the depth at which it vanishes gives a direct measure of water clarity.

What standard governs the 0171 Secchi disk and what does it limit?

The disk follows the traditional Secchi method using a 20 cm HDPE plate, so readings are limited by observer vision and ambient light rather than an electronic standard.
