What this laptop is

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is a 15.6-inch Windows 10 Pro notebook built around a quad-core Intel Core i5-8265U processor that reaches 3.9GHz. It ships with 8GB of DDR4 memory and a 256GB NVMe SSD. The HD display runs at 1366 x 768 and includes a 720p webcam. This configuration suits students and office workers who need a light machine for everyday productivity.

Thermals, noise and power

The U-series processor has a low base frequency of 1.60GHz and a modest thermal design, so the cooling system stays quiet during typical document work and web browsing. Fan activity rises only when sustained loads push the chip toward its 3.9GHz turbo. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics shares system memory and adds little extra heat. Battery life benefits from the efficient silicon and the non-touch HD panel.

The deciding specification

The screen resolution of 1366 x 768 is the single figure that determines whether this S340 fits your workflow. Text and images will appear less sharp than on Full HD panels, so buyers who need crisp detail for design, coding or media editing should look elsewhere. The 8GB memory includes 4GB soldered on board, limiting future upgrades to one SO-DIMM slot. Users who want more storage or a higher-resolution display will need a different model.

Questions about this item

How is the single DDR4 SO-DIMM slot accessed for a memory upgrade, and which step do people often miss?

Remove the bottom case screws, lift the panel carefully, then insert the module at an angle until it clicks; the step often missed is pressing the stick down firmly until both retention clips snap shut.

Which component will need replacement first — the 256 GB NVMe SSD or the 720 p webcam?

The 256 GB NVMe SSD has a finite write endurance and will eventually wear out, while the 720 p webcam is a passive sensor with no moving parts and rarely fails.

At what turbo frequency does the Core i5-8265U hit its thermal ceiling during a long compile?

The processor can reach 3.9 GHz on short bursts, but sustained loads typically settle closer to the 1.60 GHz base once the cooling saturates.
