Gaming laptop with discrete graphics

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a 15.6 inch laptop built around an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GT650M discrete graphics card. It ships with Windows 8.1 64-bit and 8GB of DDR3 memory. The non-touch display delivers a 1920x1080 resolution for gaming and multimedia work.

1TB hybrid drive and 8GB memory

A 1TB hybrid drive provides a large storage pool for games, media and project files while the solid-state portion accelerates boot and application launch times. The 8GB DDR3 configuration handles mainstream titles and creative suites, though memory-intensive workloads or heavy multitasking will saturate the available capacity.

Thermal profile and power draw

The discrete GT650M and quad-core processor generate noticeable heat under sustained load, so the cooling fans spin up audibly during gaming sessions. In lighter use such as browsing or video playback the system runs cooler and quieter. The 15.6 inch chassis weighs up to 5.9 lbs, reflecting the thermal hardware required for discrete graphics performance.

Questions about this item

Will my older USB 2.0 mouse and keyboard work with the three USB 3.0 ports on this Y500?

Yes, the three USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, so your existing mouse and keyboard will function normally.

How can I verify the GT650M discrete graphics card is active after I install Windows 8.1?

Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and confirm NVIDIA GeForce GT650M appears without a warning icon.

Does the box include a second GT650M for the Ultrabay slot or must I buy it separately?

The box contains the laptop with one GT650M installed, the Blu-ray RW drive for the Ultrabay, power adapter and documentation; a second GT650M is not included and must be purchased separately.
