Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Gaming Laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a new 15.6-inch laptop built around an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with 16GB DDR3 memory. It runs Windows 8.1 64-bit on a 1920x1080 non-touch display. This configuration targets users who want a single portable machine for gaming and multimedia creation.

Ultrabay Flexibility and Audio

The chassis includes an Ultrabay slot that lets you swap the Blu-ray RW drive for a second battery or an additional graphics card. Audio is handled by Dolby Home Theater with JBL speakers, while Bluetooth 4 and USB 3.0 ports manage wireless peripherals and fast external storage. The backlit keyboard and ThinkPad UltraNav touchpad support low-light work.

1TB Hard Drive and GT650M Graphics

The 1TB hard drive stores large game libraries and media projects, though load times are slower than solid-state alternatives. The NVIDIA GeForce GT650M discrete GPU handles mainstream titles at 1080p with medium settings. Buyers who want faster boot speeds or higher frame rates in modern AAA games will need a different platform.

Questions about this item

When will the 1TB hard drive likely need replacement?

Mechanical drives typically last several years; plan to swap it when you notice slower boot times or SMART warnings.

What limits the GT650M during long gaming sessions?

The discrete GPU hits its thermal ceiling first, causing clock throttling once the chassis saturates with heat.

How loud and hot does the Y500 get when running all day?

Fans spin up to an audible whine and the keyboard deck grows warm as the i7-3630QM and GT650M share the cooling system.
