Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Gaming Laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT650M discrete graphics. It comes with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a 1TB hybrid drive for storage. Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed, targeting users who want a multimedia-focused machine for gaming and creative work.

Compatibility Check Before Ordering

This unit is a complete laptop with integrated components; there are no internal upgrade slots to verify against an existing chassis. Confirm that the pre-installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit operating system meets your software requirements. Ensure the available USB 3.0 ports and Bluetooth 4 connectivity match your peripheral needs. The non-touch 1920x1080 display is fixed and cannot be swapped.

Thermals Noise and Power Draw

The discrete GT650M graphics card and quad-core i7-3630QM processor will generate noticeable heat during sustained gaming or rendering loads. Expect the cooling fans to become audible under heavy use, which is typical for a 5.9 lbs performance chassis. The 1TB hybrid drive adds mechanical noise during data access. Battery life will decrease significantly when the discrete GPU is active.

Questions about this item

Does the Y500 ship with the Blu-ray RW drive already installed or is that an extra purchase?

The Blu-ray RW drive is included in the box; the Ultrabay slot lets you swap it for a second GT650M graphics card or an additional drive if you buy one separately.

Should I pick the 8 GB DDR3 configuration or look for a larger memory option?

This unit comes with 8 GB DDR3 as standard; the motherboard supports more, but no higher-capacity version is listed in this offer.

What does the Core i7-3630QM at up to 3.4 GHz actually deliver when the GT650M is driving the 1920x1080 panel?

The quad-core CPU and discrete GT650M combine to run modern titles at 1080p with playable frame rates while the 1 TB hybrid drive keeps load times short.
