Who This Suits and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Buyers who want a ready-to-use gaming and multimedia notebook with fast SSD boot times, discrete graphics and a 1920x1080 non-touch display will find this configuration matches that need. Users who need a touchscreen, higher memory capacity, larger internal storage or a newer operating system should look at other models.

Deciding Specification — Discrete GT650M Graphics

The presence of the NVIDIA GeForce GT650M discrete graphics card is the single specification that separates this Y500 from integrated-graphics alternatives and determines whether it can handle the gaming and graphics-intensive workloads the series targets.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the GT650M run when the Y500 is pushed for hours?

The discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT650M handles graphics load while the Intel Core i7-3630QM manages processor tasks; together they share the chassis cooling, so sustained gaming will raise fan speed and surface temperature.

What must I already own to use the Ultrabay slot on this Y500?

The Ultrabay accepts an additional drive or a second GT650M module; you need the compatible caddy or graphics card that fits the bay.

Will the USB 3.0 ports on this Y500 work with my older USB 2.0 peripherals?

Yes, the three USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, so existing mice, keyboards and external drives will connect and function normally.
