Lenovo 4 TB SAS hard drive

The Lenovo ST4000NM0034 is a 4 TB internal hard drive built for 3.5 inch drive bays and SAS 12 Gbps host connections. It spins at 7200 RPM and uses a 512e cache format for compatibility with existing storage controllers. The unit ships with a Lenovo System X caddy for direct installation in compatible servers or arrays. It suits IT teams expanding nearline capacity on SAS infrastructure.

Thermals noise and power profile

Mechanical operation at 7200 RPM produces audible seek noise and measurable vibration typical of enterprise nearline drives. The SAS interface negotiates link speed with the backplane, drawing power only when the motor and controller are active. No active cooling is integrated; the drive relies on chassis airflow directed across its 3.5 inch frame. Power consumption scales with workload intensity and duty cycle.

Build quality and daily implications

The supplied System X caddy locks the drive into tool-less trays, reducing installation time and preventing accidental disconnection during maintenance. SAS dual-port signalling provides path redundancy when the backplane supports multipath I/O. The 512e sector emulation lets the drive present 512 byte logical blocks to older RAID firmware while writing 4 KB physical sectors internally. Weight is 2.0 pound.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5" SAS drive with the included Lenovo System X caddy into my server?

Slide the drive into the caddy until the SAS connector seats firmly on the backplane; the step most people miss is securing the caddy latch so the 12 Gbps link stays locked under vibration.

What maintenance will the 4 TB 7200 RPM SAS drive need over its service life?

No scheduled maintenance is required; monitor SMART reallocated-sector counts and replace the drive if the counter grows beyond the manufacturer threshold.

What is the first performance limit I will hit during sustained writes to this 4 TB SAS HDD?

The 7200 RPM rotational speed caps sequential throughput, so sustained transfers will plateau at the media transfer rate before the 12 Gbps SAS interface saturates.
