ThinkPad P53 mobile workstation

The Lenovo ThinkPad P53 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation running Linux Mint. It combines a hexa-core Intel Core i7-9850H processor with 16GB of DDR4 memory and an NVIDIA Quadro T2000 graphics card with 4GB of video memory. Storage totals 6TB across a 2TB NVME drive and a 4TB 2.5-inch SSD. A fingerprint reader and 300-nit IPS display complete the package.

Who this suits and who it does not

Engineers and developers who need certified professional graphics drivers on Linux will benefit from the Quadro T2000 and pre-installed Linux Mint. The 6TB of mixed storage supports large local datasets and project files. Buyers who require a touchscreen or higher than 72% colour gamut coverage should look elsewhere. The non-touch FHD panel and fixed 16GB memory capacity also limit use cases needing pen input or user-upgradable RAM.

Deciding specification: 6TB hybrid storage

The defining specification is the combined 2TB NVME plus 4TB 2.5-inch SSD storage. This capacity lets you keep operating system, applications and active project libraries on the fast NVME tier while archiving bulk data on the large SSD tier without external drives. If your workflow fits within a smaller single drive, the extra capacity adds cost and weight you may not need.

Questions about this item

Does the laptop include both the 2TB NVME and the 4TB 2.5-inch SSD already installed?

Yes, the unit ships with a 2TB NVME drive plus a 4TB 2.5-inch SSD already fitted, so no extra storage purchase is required.

Should I choose the 16GB DDR4 configuration or look for a higher capacity?

The system comes with 16GB DDR4 soldered; if your workloads regularly exceed that, you would need a model with more memory.

What does the 4.6 GHz turbo figure mean for everyday rendering?

The i7-9850H can boost to 4.6 GHz on active cores, giving short bursts of extra speed for compile jobs or viewport updates.
