Mobile workstation for ISV workloads

The Lenovo ThinkPad P71 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built for certified professional applications. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor with four cores and a 3.80 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a combined 2 TB NVMe solid-state drive plus 1 TB hard drive for large project files. NVIDIA Quadro P3000 graphics with 6 GB memory drive the 1920 x 1080 IPS display.

Spill-resistant keyboard and legacy optical drive

A full-sized, spill-resistant keyboard with TrackPoint provides the tactile feedback expected from the ThinkPad line. The chassis integrates a fingerprint reader and a smart card reader for hardware-based authentication. A DVD±RW drive remains fitted in the optical bay, allowing direct access to archival media without external adapters. The anti-glare IPS panel reduces reflections during extended sessions.

Upgrade from dual-core ultrabooks

This configuration replaces dual-core ultraportables that throttle under sustained CAD, simulation or video workloads. The quad-core processor, discrete Quadro GPU and dual-drive layout remove the bottlenecks that stall rendering and dataset manipulation. The jump is worth it when ISV certification, ECC-class driver stability and on-board optical media access are daily requirements rather than occasional conveniences.

Questions about this item

What practical limit does the PCIe NVMe interface place on the 2 TB SSD?

The 2 TB PCIe NVMe SSD uses a PCIe connection for high-speed data transfer, avoiding the throughput ceiling of older storage interfaces.

What drive bays or slots are available for the 1 TB hard drive and 2 TB SSD?

The 1 TB hard drive occupies the 2.5-inch bay and the 2 TB PCIe NVMe SSD installs in an M.2 slot inside the chassis.

How is the 2 TB PCIe NVMe SSD installed and what step is often missed?

Insert the NVMe SSD into the M.2 slot at an angle, press it flat and secure it with the retention screw; the step often missed is fastening that screw.
