Mobile workstation for professional rendering

The ThinkPad P71 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an Intel Xeon E3-1535M v6 processor with a 4.20 GHz turbo frequency. It delivers 64GB of DDR4 memory at 2400 MHz and a 4TB SSD for large project files. The 3840 x 2160 UHD IPS display and NVIDIA Quadro P4000 GPU target ISV-certified 3D rendering and multitasking workloads.

Upgrading from lesser mobile CPUs and GPUs

The quad-core Xeon with 8 MB L3 cache replaces dual-core or standard mobile processors when sustained 4.2 GHz turbo performance matters for compute tasks. The Quadro P4000 with 8 GB VRAM steps up from entry-level graphics for certified driver stability in professional applications. The jump is worth it when 64 GB RAM and 4 TB storage eliminate paging and external drives during complex scenes.

Suits ISV-certified workflows on the move

This configuration suits engineers and designers running over 100 ISV-certified apps who need a fingerprint reader, smart card reader and Pantone colour sensor for secure, colour-accurate work. The 4G LTE WWAN supports connectivity away from Wi-Fi. Buyers who need a touchscreen or a lighter chassis for frequent travel should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

What are the exact screen dimensions and resolution of the 17.3" UHD display?

How is the 64GB DDR4 memory installed and which slot configuration is often overlooked?

The 64GB DDR4 2400 MHz memory occupies the four SO-DIMM slots; the common mistake is populating only two slots and leaving the other pair empty.

When will the DVD±RW optical drive or the 4TB SSD typically need replacement?

The DVD±RW drive may require replacement after heavy disc-burning use, while the 4TB SSD should last for years under normal workloads.
