The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is a 14.0 inch Full HD laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-6500U dual-core processor. It comes with 16GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500GB M.2 NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed. The non-touch display offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This laptop suits professionals needing a portable 14-inch business machine with 16GB RAM and a fast NVMe boot drive. It is not for buyers who want a touchscreen display. It is not for users who need dedicated graphics performance. It is not for anyone requiring more than 32GB of total system memory.

The specification that decides fit

The single specification that decides fit is the Intel Core i7-6500U processor with its 2.50 GHz base and 3.10 GHz turbo frequency. This dual-core CPU determines the performance ceiling for all daily workloads. If your applications need more cores or higher sustained clock speeds, this is not the right part.

Questions about this item

What thermal limit does the Intel Core i7-6500U hit first when the ThinkPad T460 runs at full load for a long period?

The dual-core processor has a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.10 GHz; sustained workloads will push it toward its thermal ceiling, causing the chip to throttle back from the higher turbo speed to stay within its design envelope.

How much fan noise and heat should I expect from the T460 when it runs all day on typical office tasks?

With the Intel HD Graphics 520 handling the 1920 x 1080 display and the low-power CPU, the system stays cool and quiet during normal use; the fan only spins up audibly when both cores hold high clocks for extended periods.

Which memory modules must I already have if I want to expand the 16 GB DDR3 beyond the factory configuration?

The laptop has two memory slots and supports up to 32 GB total; you need DDR3 SO-DIMM sticks to fill the empty slot or replace the existing ones.
