Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480s ships new with Windows 10 Pro, an Intel Core i5-8250U processor at 1.60 GHz, 24 GB of DDR4 memory and a 2 TB NVMe solid-state drive. A 14.0" IPS FHD matte panel at 1920 x 1080 resolution and a fingerprint reader complete a configuration aimed at users who need a reliable daily driver for office work and travel.

Sustained workload behaviour

The quad-core i5-8250U can reach 3.4 GHz under load, while Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics handle typical business applications without discrete GPU heat. MIL-SPEC testing across 21 methods indicates the chassis is validated for temperature, shock and vibration extremes, so performance remains consistent during long sessions rather than throttling after a short burst.

Installation and common pitfalls

Memory is soldered, so the 24 GB total cannot be upgraded later; buyers who need more capacity must choose a different model at purchase. The single 2 TB NVMe drive is replaceable, though opening the case requires Torx tools and care with the internal battery cable. Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C supports 40 Gbps peripherals, but older USB-A devices may need adapters.

Questions about this item

How much fan noise and heat should I expect from the Core i5-8250U when the laptop runs all day?

The 8250U operates at a 1.60 GHz base and 3.4 GHz turbo, so sustained workloads will spin the fans audibly and warm the chassis, but the ultrabook-class cooler keeps temperatures within normal business-laptop limits.

What peripherals or cables must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 3 port at 40 Gbps?

You need a Thunderbolt 3-certified cable or dock; standard USB-C cables will work but fall back to lower speeds and cannot drive the full 40 Gbps bandwidth.

Will my older USB-A mouse and monitor work with the four USB ports on this T480s?

Yes, all four ports include USB-A connectors, so legacy mice, keyboards and display adapters plug in directly without dongles.
