Product identity

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5 is a new 14.0" mainstream laptop with a 1920 x 1080 FHD IPS non-touch display. It runs on an Intel Core i7-7600U processor up to 3.9 GHz with 8GB memory and a 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD. Windows 7 Professional is pre-installed. A 4G LTE WWAN card provides mobile broadband connectivity.

Who this suits

Professionals needing a carbon-fibre reinforced chassis tested against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 durability checks will value the rugged build. The integrated fingerprint reader adds biometric security. Thunderbolt 3 over USB Type-C supports charging and high-speed peripherals. Bluetooth 4.1 handles wireless accessories. Buyers who require a current operating system or a touchscreen should look at something else.

Deciding specification

The 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD is the single specification that decides fit: it determines both the storage capacity and the drive interface available for the operating system, applications and data.
