Portable Business Laptop

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is a 12.5-inch touchscreen laptop built for mobile professionals. It ships new with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-2640M processor reaching 3.50 GHz turbo frequency, 16GB DDR3 memory and a 256GB solid-state drive. The HD display runs at 1366x768 resolution with touch input and pen support.

Connectivity and Expansion

Three USB ports provide peripheral connections while VGA and DisplayPort outputs handle external monitors. A Gigabit LAN port and 802.11b/g/n wireless cover wired and wireless networking. The docking connector allows shared workstation setups with compatible ThinkPad series laptops. Shared system memory handles graphics duties without a discrete adapter.

Upgrade Context

This configuration replaces slower hard-drive systems with a 256GB SSD and maximises memory at 16GB DDR3 for responsive multitasking. The jump is worthwhile for users needing touch and pen input on a durable, lightweight chassis with a spill-resistant keyboard. Buyers requiring a dedicated graphics processor or higher-resolution panel should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Does the Core i7-2640M hit its 3.50 GHz turbo ceiling before the shared DDR3 memory bandwidth limits performance?

The processor can reach 3.50 GHz turbo frequency while the 16GB DDR3 memory and integrated graphics share system memory bandwidth.

How loud or hot does the 12.5 inch touch chassis get when the i7-2640M runs at 3.50 GHz all day?

The compact 12.5 inch chassis houses the i7-2640M with its integrated graphics and 16GB DDR3; sustained 3.50 GHz operation will generate noticeable heat and fan noise in this form factor.

Which dock connector mates with the single docking port on this X220?

The single docking connector accepts Lenovo ThinkPad Series 3 docks used across T, L and W series models for shared work areas.
