LSI 9211-8i HBA IT Mode P20

The LSI 9211-8i is a host bus adapter that presents eight SAS ports through a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot. It runs firmware version 20.00.07.00 in IT mode, passing drives directly to the operating system without hardware RAID abstraction. The SAS2008 controller supports both SAS and SATA devices at 6Gbps per lane.

Suited for ZFS, FreeNAS or unRAID builds

This card suits builders who want the OS to manage every drive for software RAID or pooled storage. It is not for buyers who need on-board RAID processing or hardware acceleration. It is not for systems that lack a PCIe 3.0 x8 electrical connection or that require more than eight drive ports.

Eight SAS ports at 6Gbps on PCIe 3.0 x8

The single specification that decides fit is the eight-port 6Gbps SAS interface on a PCIe 3.0 x8 bus. Each port handles one SAS or SATA drive, giving eight direct connections. If the chassis, backplane or drive count demands more ports, this adapter will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

What does the PCIe 3.0 x8 interface cap the LSI 9211-8i at in practice?

The PCIe 3.0 x8 slot provides enough bandwidth for eight 6Gbps SAS or SATA ports without saturating the bus.

What physical brackets are included so the LSI 9211-8i fits my chassis?

The box contains one full-height bracket and one low-profile bracket for either standard or slim cases.

How is the LSI 9211-8i installed and what step do people often miss?

Seat the card in a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, attach the chosen bracket, then flash the IT Mode P20 firmware if the board shipped in IR mode.
