A 2-flute ball nose end mill for contour milling and finishing operations
This M.A. Ford end mill is a solid-carbide cutting tool designed for contouring, profiling and finishing operations on CNC milling machines and rigid manual mills. The two-flute ball-nose geometry suits general-purpose machining of steels, stainless steels, cast iron and non-ferrous alloys. It targets machinists and job-shop operators who need reliable performance across a range of materials.
Replacing a single-flute cutter or a dull multi-flute tool with this two-flute design increases chip clearance and reduces vibration in slotting and pocketing. The jump is worthwhile when cycle time matters and the workpiece material is within the cutter's recommended range. It is not suited for high-feed roughing strategies that demand three or more flutes for chip thinning.
The half-inch cutting diameter provides enough rigidity for medium-depth finishing passes in most common workpiece sizes. It runs out of reach on deep-cavity work where longer-reach or smaller-diameter tools are required, and it is not intended for heavy roughing where higher flute counts or coarse-pitch geometries evacuate chips faster.

The cutter has a 1/2 inch shank, so use a 1/2 inch collet or holder that matches your machine's taper.
Clean the shank and collet, insert the tool until the shank seats fully, then tighten the collet nut to the maker's torque — skipping the torque check is the common error.
Replace it when the ball radius shows visible wear, chipping, or when surface finish degrades beyond your tolerance.
