8-Bay USB 3.1 Gen 2 Enclosure

The Mediasonic 8-bay desktop server system connects eight 3.5-inch SATA drives to a host over USB 3.1 Gen 2 at up to 10.0Gbps. A USB-C to USB-C cable with e-mark IC is included. The unit is new and designed for local direct-attached storage expansion.

Desktop users needing high-capacity direct storage

Suits Windows 7 through 10 and macOS 10.12 or later users who want up to 18TB per 3.5-inch drive or 12TB per 2.5-inch drive with a separate bracket. Smart fan control and power sync simplify operation. Not suited for Linux environments or buyers requiring network-attached access.

10.0Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface

The single specification that decides fit is the 10.0Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C connection. Hosts must provide this port and a supported operating system to reach the stated transfer rate. UASP and S.M.A.R.T. pass-through are supported over this link.

Questions about this item

What does the 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection deliver in a real machine?

The 10Gbps link supports UASP so sequential reads and writes run near the drive's native SATA ceiling instead of stalling on protocol overhead.

Which interface caps the transfer speed and what limits it in practice?

USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C caps at 10Gbps; the actual ceiling is the slowest SATA drive installed and whether the host port negotiates Gen 2.

What does the enclosure need to fit eight 3.5-inch drives and sit on a desk?

It is a desktop chassis with front-to-back airflow, a built-in fan with three speed levels, and a 3.3 ft USB-C to USB-C cable with e-mark IC.
