15-inch touchscreen laptop

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 combines a 15.0-inch IPS touchscreen with an AMD Ryzen 7 4980U octo-core processor running at 2.0GHz. It ships with 8GB of DDR4 memory and a 256GB PCIe NVMe solid state drive. Windows 11 Home is pre-installed in a platinum silver chassis.

Build integration and expandability

The system uses integrated Radeon graphics, so no discrete GPU slot or external power connector is required. Two memory slots are present with 16GB maximum supported capacity, allowing a future upgrade from the soldered 8GB. The NVMe drive occupies the single internal storage bay, leaving no second drive bay for additional mass storage.

Sustained workload behaviour

The 6MB L3 cache helps maintain throughput during extended multi-threaded tasks such as code compilation or video encoding. Battery life reaches up to 11.5 hours under typical productivity loads, reducing the need for frequent recharging during mobile work sessions. Wireless connectivity uses 802.11ac for stable network performance over long periods.

Questions about this item

Does the Ryzen 7 4980U processor throttle under sustained heavy workloads?

The eight-core Ryzen 7 4980U runs at a 2.0 GHz base frequency with 6 MB L3 cache; thermal management will reduce clocks if the cooling system reaches its limit during prolonged heavy loads.

How loud and hot does the laptop get when running all day?

Integrated Radeon graphics and the 15.0-inch IPS panel share the thermal solution; fan noise and surface temperature rise with continuous use but remain within the design envelope for an ultraportable chassis.

What memory upgrades are possible since the RAM is soldered?

The system includes 8 GB of DDR4 memory and supports a maximum of 16 GB; the two available slots allow expansion if a module is not already populated.
