Zinc-plated steel cotter pins secure metal assemblies with split-pin fastening in a 100-count pack
The MIDWEST FASTENER 04039 cotter pins are split pins designed to secure metal components by bending the two tines during installation. They function like a staple or rivet to lock assemblies in place. This pack contains 100 pieces suited for automotive, agricultural and general maintenance tasks where removable locking is required. Buyers needing permanent rivets or welded joints will not find that here.
These are passive zinc plated steel fasteners with no moving parts, electrical connections or cooling requirements. They produce no noise and draw no power in any environment. The zinc plating provides corrosion resistance for normal outdoor and under-hood exposure. Installations subject to constant immersion or aggressive chemicals may need a different coating.
Under continuous vibration or cyclic loading the bent tines maintain their grip without loosening, provided the initial bend is formed correctly. The 3/16 inch diameter shank resists shear in typical clevis and castle nut applications. Pins exposed to extreme shock loads beyond the material yield point can deform and should be inspected at service intervals.

Insert the pin through the aligned hole, then bend both tines outward with pliers; the step often missed is spreading both legs fully so the pin cannot rotate back out.
The zinc coating resists corrosion, but in salty or wet environments the plating can wear; inspect periodically and replace any pin showing white rust or bent tines.
The split tines can fatigue and straighten slightly, reducing retention; replace the pin if the legs no longer spring apart after bending.
