Blind rivet with dome head joins materials from one side using a pop-rivet tool
The MIDWEST FASTENER CORP 51087 is a steel blind rivet with a dome head, designed for joining materials when access is limited to one side. It is supplied as a tubular assembly with a mandrel through the centre. Installation requires a specially designed tool to draw the mandrel, expanding the blind end before the mandrel snaps off. This fastener suits automotive, industrial and general repair tasks where only one face of the joint is reachable.
The rivet body is steel, providing mechanical strength for structural joints. During setting, the mandrel is pulled into the rivet sleeve, expanding the blind end to clamp the workpieces together. The mandrel then fractures at a designed break point, leaving a filled rivet body. No thermal output, acoustic signature or electrical power draw is associated with this mechanical fastening process.
A drilled hole matching the rivet diameter is required before installation. The process frees the assembler from needing access to the rear of the workpiece, unlike through-bolts or screws with nuts. A compatible rivet tool — hand, pneumatic or hydraulic — must be available to pull the mandrel. The fastener is consumed during use and cannot be reused or adjusted after setting.

Drill a 5/32 in hole through both pieces, insert the rivet fully, place the gun nose over the mandrel, and squeeze until the mandrel snaps off; the step often missed is holding the gun perpendicular so the mandrel breaks cleanly.
Once the mandrel snaps off the rivet is permanent; no maintenance is required, and replacement means drilling out the old rivet and installing a new one.
The rivet's shear strength is the first limit; sustained vibration can cause the clamped sheets to fret and the joint to loosen before the steel rivet itself fails.
