A T-nut for soft wood that accepts #10-24 threads and has a 5/16 inch barrel height
This #10-24 T-nut creates a durable metal thread in soft wood so a machine screw or bolt can be fastened and removed repeatedly without stripping the material. The zinc-plated steel body resists corrosion in indoor and sheltered outdoor environments. It is suited for furniture assembly, jig building and repair work where wood threads would wear out quickly.
Cutting threads directly into soft wood often yields a weak joint that fails under load or vibration. A press-in nut can back out over time. This T-nut’s prongs grip the surrounding wood fibres, and the 5/16 in barrel height distributes clamping force across a larger area, making the upgrade worthwhile when the joint will see repeated assembly cycles or sustained tension.
Drill a clearance hole for the barrel, press the nut flush, and drive the fastener from the opposite side. The 13-count pack supplies enough inserts for multiple projects or spares. No adhesive or special tools are required, freeing up bench time and eliminating the need for threaded inserts that demand a tap or heat installation.

The 5/16 in barrel height seats the prongs flush in material of matching depth, so the wood should be at least that thick to avoid proud edges.
Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the barrel, press the nut in straight, then tap gently with a hammer until the prongs grip; driving the bolt before the prongs are seated is the common error.
Replace it if the zinc coating shows white corrosion or the internal #10-24 threads no longer hold the bolt securely.
