Connects two 3/8"-16 threaded rods end to end with Grade 2 steel and zinc plating
This MIDWEST FASTENER 64504 coupling nut joins two 3/8"-16 threaded rods end to end. Its internal threads meet in the centre so each rod engages fully without passing through. The Grade 2 steel body provides standard fastening strength for general mechanical assemblies. Zinc plating adds a layer of corrosion resistance for indoor or sheltered outdoor use.
The nut requires a wrench or socket that fits its external hex profile for installation. Because it bridges two rods, it eliminates the need for a separate turnbuckle or sleeve in tension applications. The zinc finish does not add measurable thickness, so standard 3/8"-16 thread gauges remain valid for inspection. No additional washers or lock nuts are mandated by the design itself.
Under continuous tension the Grade 2 steel stretches predictably within its elastic limit before any permanent deformation. The zinc coating remains intact unless the nut is over-torqued past the substrate yield point. Vibration does not loosen the joint unless the mating rods back out, so periodic re-tightening is only needed in high-cycle dynamic service. Creep is negligible at ambient temperatures for static loads.

The coarse 3/8"-16 thread provides a larger load-bearing flank area than finer pitches, so the Grade 2 steel nut reaches its proof load before the threads strip under sustained tension.
No — the nut is a passive fastener with no moving parts or electrical current, so it generates no heat and its zinc plating resists corrosion without changing torque requirements over time.
You need two rods with 3/8" diameter and 16 threads per inch so the internal threads meet correctly in the centre of the nut.
