Gaming laptop for QHD play

The MSI Katana 15 HX B14WFK-278US pairs a 14th Gen Intel Core i7-14650HX with a GeForce RTX 5060 and 32 GB of memory. A 1 TB SSD stores the library while the 15.6 inch panel delivers 2560 x 1440 resolution at 165 Hz. Windows 11 Home is pre-installed on the Intel HM770 platform.

Thermals noise and power

The chassis is built for sustained gaming loads with the RTX 5060 and high-wattage CPU. Fan curves ramp under load to keep temperatures in check, so expect audible airflow during heavy sessions. Idle and light productivity work runs quieter with lower power draw. HDMI output supports an external display without taxing the internal panel.

Upgrade path and fit

This unit replaces an older 1080p 60 Hz gaming notebook or a mid-range workstation lacking discrete RTX graphics. The jump is worth it when you need higher refresh rates at QHD and the 32 GB memory headroom for multitasking. Buyers who want more storage than 1 TB or a larger screen diagonal should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

How is the 1 TB SSD installed in the Katana 15 HX B14WFK-278US and what step do people miss?

The drive slides into the internal M.2 slot and is secured with the single retention screw; the step most people miss is seating the connector fully before tightening that screw.

What maintenance or replacement will the 32 GB memory and 1 TB SSD need later?

The 32 GB memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded; the 1 TB SSD is removable so it can be replaced with a larger drive when capacity runs out.

What limit appears first on the RTX 5060 during sustained gaming at 2560 x 1440 and 165 Hz?

The GPU power ceiling is reached before the 165 Hz panel can be fully driven in demanding titles, so frame rates settle below the maximum refresh rate.
