Netgear Inc. CM1000-100NAS DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

Product identity

The Netgear CM1000-100NAS is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem built for subscribers who want to own their equipment instead of paying a monthly rental fee. It connects to the provider network through a single coaxial port and delivers a wired Gigabit Ethernet link to a separate router or computer. The unit activates through a web browser and ships with a power adapter and Ethernet cable.

Upgrade path

This modem replaces a leased DOCSIS 3.0 device and removes the recurring charge that can reach 168 dollars per year. The jump is worth it when the provider offers speed tiers above the 3.0 ceiling or when the household wants headroom for future plan upgrades. It supports both 3.0 and 3.1 networks, so the swap works immediately on existing infrastructure.

Capacity and headroom

The modem bonds 32 downstream and 8 upstream QAM channels on DOCSIS 3.0 and adds 2 OFDM downstream with 2 OFDMA upstream channels on DOCSIS 3.1. That combination handles Gigabit internet plans up to 1000 Mbps download. The single Gigabit Ethernet port becomes the bottleneck if the provider ever provisions multi-gigabit service, and the lack of a telephone port means it cannot replace a gateway used for bundled voice.
