16-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Switch

The NETGEAR UMG16 is a 16-port Gigabit unmanaged switch built for small and medium businesses. It provides 16 RJ45 copper ports, each supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds. The metal chassis is fanless for silent operation and supports both desktop and wall mounting. Total switching bandwidth reaches 32 Gbps.

Unmanaged Layer 1 Operation

As an unmanaged Layer 1 device, the switch requires no configuration and offers no SNMP or remote management features. It handles jumbo frames up to 9216 bytes and uses store-and-forward architecture with IEEE 802.3x flow control. Uplink interfaces run at 10/100 Mbps, which may limit aggregate throughput when multiple ports transmit simultaneously.

Upgrade Path from Fast Ethernet Hubs

This unit replaces older 10/100 Mbps hubs or switches with fewer ports, delivering full Gigabit speed to every connected device. The jump is worthwhile when you need 16 simultaneous Gigabit connections without fan noise or management complexity. It is not suited for networks requiring VLANs, QoS, or uplink speeds above 100 Mbps.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 16-port model or a smaller switch?

The UMG16 provides 16 RJ45 ports that each handle 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps, giving 32 Gbps total bandwidth for 16 simultaneous connections

What does the 1000 Mbps per port figure mean when the switch is in use?

Every port can run at 1 Gbps at the same time with non-blocking wire speed and store-and-forward architecture

Which interface standard does the switch use and what speed does it cap at?

All 16 ports are RJ45 using IEEE 802.3 auto-negotiation, limited to 1000 Mbps per port and 32 Gbps aggregate
