Compact DX Close-Up Lens

The AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a fixed focal length lens for Nikon DX-format DSLRs. It delivers 1.0x life-size reproduction for detailed close-up work. The 40mm focal length also suits general photography including portraits and landscapes. Its lightweight build makes it easy to carry for everyday shooting.

Focal Length and Focus Limits

The 40mm focal length provides a 38 degree 50 angle of view on DX sensors. Autofocus operates from infinity down to a minimum focus distance of 0.53 feet. The Close-Range Correction System maintains optical performance across this entire focus range. The lens does not zoom, so framing requires physical movement.

Straightforward Mount and Focus

The lens mounts directly on compatible Nikon DSLR bodies without adapters. A Silent Wave Motor drives autofocus quietly and smoothly. A focus distance indicator on the barrel shows the range from 0.53 feet to infinity. The non-rotating front element simplifies the use of polarising or protective filters.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 40 mm f/2.8G DX Micro or another focal length?

The 40 mm focal length gives a 38 degree 50 angle of view on DX sensors and reaches 1.0x magnification at 0.53 ft, making it a versatile single prime for close-ups and general shooting.

What does 1.0x magnification mean when I am shooting?

At the minimum focus distance of 0.53 ft the subject is recorded at life-size on the sensor, so a small coin or flower fills the frame at actual size.

How does the f/2.8 maximum aperture perform in practice?

The f/2.8 aperture provides bright viewing and shallow depth of field for portraits, while the Silent Wave Motor keeps autofocus quiet during HD movie recording.
