40mm f/2.8G DX Macro Prime

This Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a 60mm-equivalent macro prime designed for DX-format cameras. It delivers 1:1 life-size magnification with a minimum focusing distance of 6.4 inches. The optical design uses a Close Range Correction system for consistent sharpness across the focusing range. Super Integrated Coating on every element reduces flare and ghosting for better contrast.

Close-up shooters needing 1:1 on DX

Photographers who want true 1:1 reproduction on a DX body will find the 40mm focal length practical for product, nature and detail work. The Silent Wave Motor gives fast, quiet autofocus with full-time manual override for video. Buyers who need a zoom range or a longer working distance for skittish subjects should look at alternative macro options. The fixed 40mm focal length also limits framing flexibility compared to variable focal lengths.

Filter kit, hood, cap keeper and case

The bundle adds a 52mm three-piece filter kit for protection and creative effects right away. A dedicated HB-61 bayonet hood blocks stray light to maintain the contrast the coating provides. A lens cap keeper prevents lost caps during frequent shooting sessions. The included CL-0915 soft case offers padded storage for the lens and accessories together.

Questions about this item

Does the 40mm f/2.8G macro lens need a DX-format Nikon body to achieve its 1:1 magnification?

Yes, the lens is built for DX-format Nikon DSLRs; on that format it delivers a 60mm-equivalent field of view and reaches 1:1 life-size magnification at the 6.4-inch minimum focusing distance.

Can I keep using my existing 52mm filters with this lens and the included filter kit?

The lens takes 52mm threads, so the bundled 3-piece filter kit fits directly and any other 52mm filters you already own will also mount without an adapter.

How can I verify the Silent Wave Motor is focusing correctly after I attach the lens?

Switch to AF mode; the motor should drive focus smoothly and silently from the 6.4-inch close focus out to infinity, and the focus ring will still turn for manual override without leaving AF.
