Ultra-fast f/1.4 portrait lens

This Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens is a high-performance mid-range telephoto designed for Nikon DSLR cameras. Its ultra-fast f/1.4 aperture provides a bright viewfinder image and exceptional background blur. It is built for photographers who need shallow depth of field and reliable autofocus in a classic focal length.

Nano Crystal Coat and internal focus

The Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for greater image clarity. Internal Focus (IF) delivers fast and quiet autofocus without changing the lens length, retaining working distance throughout the focus range. The M/A focus mode switch allows quick changes between autofocus and manual operation.

Edge-to-edge sharpness on FX and DX

Optimised for edge-to-edge sharpness on both FX and DX-format DSLRs, this lens covers the full-frame image circle. On DX-format bodies the angle of view is equivalent to a focal length of 127.5 mm in 35mm format. Photographers needing wider angles or zoom versatility should consider other lenses.

Questions about this item

Will the aperture blades or focus motor need servicing after heavy use?

The lens uses an internal Silent Wave Motor for autofocus and a nine-blade rounded diaphragm; both are sealed inside the barrel and have no user-serviceable parts.

What optical limit appears first when shooting wide open at f/1.4 for extended sessions?

Residual spherical aberration and slight longitudinal chromatic fringing are the first visible limits at maximum aperture, especially on high-resolution FX sensors.

How much heat does the barrel generate during all-day portrait sessions?

The all-metal barrel stays close to ambient temperature because the internal-focus design moves only lightweight lens groups, producing negligible heat buildup.
