SB-700 Speedlight for Nikon i-TTL

The Nikon SB-700 is a dedicated flash unit built for Nikon i-TTL camera systems. It suits photographers who need on-camera bounce lighting or wireless commander and remote control across multiple Speedlights. The zoom head covers FX-format ranges from 24 to 120 millimetres and DX-format ranges from 14 to 120 millimetres. A wide-angle diffusion panel extends coverage down to 12 millimetres on FX and 8 millimetres on DX. It is not for shooters who require a built-in radio transmitter instead of optical wireless control.

Sustained output with thermal protection

Recycling time stays near 2.5 seconds with alkaline, Evolta or NiMH cells and rises to roughly 3.5 seconds with lithium AA batteries. Thermal cut-out protection interrupts firing when the flash head overheats, then resumes once the temperature drops. This behaviour limits continuous burst shooting during long events or high-speed sequences. The guide number reaches 92 feet at ISO 100 and 128 feet at ISO 200, both measured at the 35-millimetre zoom position in FX format.

Slide-on mounting with filter detection

The unit slides onto the camera hot shoe and locks with a single lever, drawing power from four user-supplied AA batteries. Automatic color filter detection identifies attached gels and communicates the information to compatible Nikon bodies. The flash head tilts downward to minus 7 degrees and upward to 90 degrees with click-stops at minus 7, 0, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees, while rotating 180 degrees left and right. Photographers needing a dedicated external battery pack connector will not find one on this model.

Questions about this item

Does the SB-700 overheat during all-day shooting?

Thermal cut-out protection disables the flash if it overheats, then restores operation once the unit cools.

Which batteries does the 4808 require?

Four AA-size cells — alkaline, Evolta, lithium or NiMH (including 2600 mAh or eneloop) — all supported.

Will the SB-700 work wirelessly with my D7000?

Yes. The D7000 is listed as compatible and the SB-700 provides both commander and remote wireless functions.
