Telephoto zoom for sports and wildlife

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S covers a 100-400mm focal range with a variable f/4.5-5.6 aperture. It uses the Z mount for FX-format mirrorless cameras. Inner Balance technology keeps the centre of gravity stable during gimbal work or handheld tracking of moving subjects.

Optical performance across the range

Six Super ED and two ED glass elements suppress chromatic aberration and colour fringing throughout the zoom. ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings reduce ghosting, flare and reflections in strong or backlit conditions. Vibration Reduction steadies the image during sustained handheld sessions at long focal lengths.

Practical limits of the Z-mount telephoto

The variable aperture reaches f/40 at minimum, restricting depth-of-field control and low-light shutter speeds at 400mm. The 77mm filter thread accepts the included ULTIMAXX UV filter and tulip hood. The multi-focus stepping motor drives autofocus, while the programmable control ring offers custom adjustment during operation.
