Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter

The Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter connects select Nikon cameras to smart devices for wireless image transfer and remote control. It supports the D600, D610, 1 AW1, 1 J3, 1 S1 and 1 V2 models. Photographers who want to share photos directly from their camera to a phone or tablet will find it useful. It does not suit cameras outside the listed compatibility range.

Installation and common issues

The adapter plugs into the camera's accessory port and pairs with the Wireless Mobile Utility app on Android or iOS. Android phones need version 2.3 or later, tablets need 3.0 or later, and iOS devices need version 6 or later. Setup fails if the app is not installed or if the mobile operating system is older than required. Connection drops can occur if the wireless signal is obstructed.

Practical limits of the wireless link

The link runs at 54 Mbps, which governs how quickly images move from camera to device. Large RAW files or long bursts will take noticeable time to transfer. Range is limited by standard Wi-Fi physics and physical barriers. The adapter does not add new camera functions beyond Live View, remote shutter release and file transfer.

Questions about this item

How do I verify the Nikon WU-1b is transferring images at the full 54 Mbps rate after pairing it with my phone?

Open the Wireless Mobile Utility app on your Android or iOS device, start a transfer from the camera, and watch the progress bar; a steady, rapid fill indicates the adapter is operating at its rated 54 Mbps data rate.

What comes in the box with the Nikon WU-1b and what must I supply myself?

The box contains the WU-1b adapter unit only; you must provide a compatible Nikon camera such as the D600, D610, 1 AW1, 1 J3, 1 S1 or 1 V2, plus a smartphone or tablet running Android 2.3 or later, Android 3.0 or later for tablets, or iOS 6 or later with the Wireless Mobile Utility app installed.

Which version of the Nikon WU-1b should I choose for my D600 versus a Nikon 1 V2?

There is only one version of the WU-1b; it works with both the D600 and the Nikon 1 V2 as well as the D610, 1 AW1, 1 J3 and 1 S1, so no model selection is needed.
